Reviews
Christian Thrash Godz have been tearing up the underground scene since way back in 1992 so you know your are in for a precise Thrash Metal attack when you toss on their latest CD, Into the Pit. From the killer "Descent into Hell" cover art (depicting what will happen to the vast majority of SOD readers someday), to the Kreator-inspired riff work, to the explosive dynamics of signature tracks like "Exonerate" and Transgressor", this one has it all. This is not your parent's Christian Thrash Metal – this is the real f*cking deal! 8 Skulls... -- David Horn -- SCREAMS OF DEATH

Ultimatum, purveyers of aggressive, speed driven thrash metal, has been a player in this field for well over a decade. They certainly have the chops and an arsenal of neck snapping riffs to twist the heads of even the most jaded thrash metal connoisseur. ... -- Joseph Graham -- OUTBURN MAGAZINE, ISSUE #43

Ultimatum don’t mask their music behind gimmicks or a forced modern style of metal that comes across as hokey. They play ‘80s-inspired heavy metal and proudly—with a capital “P”—wear it on their sleeves. And that’s all that matters as they steamroll through Into the Pit with confidence and attitude, churning out killer tunes in the vein of classic bands like Accept, Exodus, Megadeth and Testament. Plus they get props for a heavier cover of Iron Maiden’s classic, ‘Wrathchild.” Good, solid heavy metal.... -- Adrian Bromley -- UNRESTRAINED! ISSUE #37

it's a veritable smorgasbord of thrash, speed, and flat out heavy METAL...This album shreds, tears, rips, bangs, and various other adverbs to the like. May result in self-educed blunt force trauma. ... -- Uncle Necro -- UNCLE NECRO'S PADDED CELL

Into the Pit features the razor sharp vocals of Scott Waters. His style may not be for everyone, but extreme metal fans are likely going to love this. His style is almost Death Metal like, but unlike many singers who fall into the cookie monster trap, you can understand the lyrics. At times, Waters often reminds me of Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies. Often Into the Pit is a heavy record, that compares sonically to 80’s thrash metal. Fans of bands like Overkill, Testament and some early Metallica, may find something to sink their teeth into here. On Into the Pit, the guitars are fierce, the lyrics and vocals are intense, and the drum beats are driving and sometimes insanely fast.... -- HARD ROCK HIDEOUT

"Into the Pit" is an impressive comeback for the band after a long, 7-year break. The album contains both more melodic numbers ala the debut, and heavier ones along the lines of their more recent outputs. This time there are some faster thrashers which stir up the mood ("Exonerate", "Transgressor"), plus a cool cover version of Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild". "Into the Pit” is a bluesy instrumental with very nice guitar work.... -- Ivan Muhov -- THE THRASH METAL GUIDE

The new Ultimatum's album came out in 2007 and it's titled "Into The Pit". It isn't a coincidence that "pit" is evoked, the location in which, at front of the stage, the thrash metal fans unleash themselves in the mosh and in a savage headbanging. This new CD of the American band is in fact a manifest of the most classic thrash, containing the moshy classic rhythms, typical of the bands of the oriental coast, from Anthrax to Overkill regarding the secular scene. The new album is good for different reasons.... -- Leonardo Cammi -- HOLYSTEEL.COM

...vocalist Scott Waters' voice is outstanding! Aggressive to the bone, this long-haired brother of Metal does remind me to Roger Martinez of Vengenance Rising and Steve Souza (ex-Exodus). His way of virulently and aggressive way of singing is brilliant, it really bites! Fans of firm guitar duels, "Into The Pit" is what you're looking for. There's a battle going on as soon as the present shredders show up with devastating hooks, leads, rhythms...all delivered with brilliant melodies, different ways of tempo's,...you get here the bests of the bests served up! Bass works (4 and 8 string) roar real hard and drummer in charge pounds its skins without mercy...fast and furious but checked with a perfect form of concentration. ... -- METAL TO INFINITY

At a time when a lot on new Thrash Metal bands are shooting for the “Bonded By Blood” era of Thrash, ULTIMATUM does something a little different. They shoot for the later era of Thrash when many of the bands went with a lot groovier material and lost a lot of the chaotic nature of Thrash. And surprisingly the band succeeds at it. Many Thrash fans may hoo-hah over this but the fact of the matter is this: ULTIMATUM plays groove inspired Thrash Metal on “Into The Pit” and they play it well. Now it’s not surprising that this is the form of metal they choose to play. The band has been around for a while. 1992 is what my records show and that was the time when this groove thrash was big. The interesting part about this is that the band continues to play it even on their fourth full length album 15 years later. That’s dedication my friends.... -- Matt -- WWW.METAL-OBSERVER.COM

Sledgehammer heavy guitars and pounding bass give way to Scott's chorus shrieks that are so heavy that they sound inhuman, yet no vocal after effects were used. This completely shows off the professional studio quality of the recording, and the techniques of a producer who actually knows what metal should sound like! Producer Ysidro Garcia should be saluted for creating what is easily the best sounding Ultimatum record yet.... -- Noah Salo -- THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH

ULTIMATUM are back, back “Into The Pit”, back after 6 years of absence. With “Into The Pit” the US trash/speed metal vetarans once again have unleashed a pure metal fury, following their idols Exodus, Tourniquet, Vengeance Rising, Megadeth, Overkill and Forbidden. They definitely have matured over the years and are now displaying themselves as a tight and perfect working old school heavy metal machine. Watch out … this stuff is dangerously heavy! ... -- WWW.MELODIC.NET

Ultimatum's new full length Into the Pit has been highly anticipated...the album is full of some heavy riffing, with a sprinkling of fiery axework and memorable tunes... -- Chris Gatto -- HM MAGAZINE

Ultimatum is an American Christian Thrash metal band formed in 1992 by guitarist Robert Gutierrez. But don’t let the fact that these boys believe in Christ lead you astray, they also produce tremendous heavy metal music.... -- Matthew Hoffman -- HARDROCKHAVEN.NET

Expect a mixture of speed/trash like bands such as Overkill, Exodus and Vengeance Rising (especially the vocals) played in their earlier days. You can say that the band plays old school thrash. The vocals are a mixture of Udo Dirkschneider and Exodus-like vocals. The numbers are played fast and tight.... -- POWERMETAL.DK

The Americans present powerful thrash metal with a marked heavy metal element, something that for example comes across in a version of Iron Maiden's "Wratchild". A general outline would maybe be to describe them as a mix/blend of Exodus, Overkill and Metal Church. ... -- Leif Kringen -- SCREAM MAGAZINE

Every song sports a crunchy sound, with Roberts signature guitar-tone as a main focus. The man is really getting out of his shell, delivering his best riffs, solos and overall guitar-work. Just check out the bridge going into, and continuing during the chorus for "Blind Faith"! That riff alone is worth the disc!! And don't get me started on the awesome "Heart Of Metal". That song is already a classic! In fact, the entire album is friggin' great...... -- Kurt Morgan Skjæringrud -- METAL METROPOLIS

Mighty New Mexico thrasher’s Ultimatum return...(with) one of the year’s top Thrash Metal albums...Guitarist Robert Gutierrez absolutely shreds all the way through this album.... -- Shawn Pelata -- DIGITALMETAL

Killer cover..Can`t wait to get it..

By ultmetal (10/04/2005 10:26:09 am):
Thank you. Rexorcist did a killer job on the cover art. Hopefully everyone will like the music as much as the cover. The CD will most likely have six new studio cuts. We are also talking about putting a live song or two on as a bonus. The EP is a couple months off yet, I will let you all know when a release date is closer. I can tell you that the names of the new songs are: One For All, Blind Faith, Deathwish, Heart of Metal, Blood Covenant and a newly recorded, mega-fueled version of a song called "Blink".

By TrogDawn (10/05/2005 4:26:17 pm):
Having heard 4 of the 6 cuts to be included on this release, I don't think there's any doubt that people will like the music as much as they liek the cover! The best stuff yet!!! \m/

By HarmonicSqueal (01/16/2006 3:13:33 pm):
Agreed! I can't wait for the final release! The mixes I've heard so far are phenomenal!

By ARCHAIC REVELATION (01/17/2006 1:48:22 pm):
I don't have this one yet, as it is not released yet. However, I have been priviliged enough to be allowed to hear tracks from the album while it was still being recorded! Let me tell you, you are going to WANT to get your hands on this album!! Death Wish, and One For All are songs that really stand out! Ultimatum has already played these songs live at thier shows, and I love the songs more and more, every time I hear them!

By Adchyrch (02/12/2006 11:22:32 am):
Ive heard demos of 2 of the cuts, Death Wish and Heart of Metal and even though im not big on Thrash Metal I Want this album cuz it just plain SHREDS!!!!

By ultmetal (03/27/2006 8:17:25 am):

Can't wait!

By iamawarrior (12/14/2006 3:13:59 am):
If this has not been released yet, why are they straight five's all across the board? I can comment on the cover. It's colorful like mine, the artist is good, but it's so cliche. Just the same as all the other over the top metal cd covers. And you thought mine was too much. The only suggestion I would make to Rex, is to try to make any one object big enough for people to see easily without squinting. It's just 5" x 5". Hard to see in a Christian bookstore CD rack. But at least it is as colorful as ours, which was smart. The use of the yellow is almost like a copy cat from our design. Maybe so, I take as a compliment. Like Fishing, I'd give it a 2.5

By ultmetal (08/30/2007 2:11:19 pm):
Well, after many delays, "Into the Pit" delivered to the record company and is scheduled to be released on or around October 30, 2007. The final CD will have eleven songs, including the four that appeared on "...'til the End!" All four tracks have been re-recorded, and in some cases slightly changed. We are very proud of this CD. Each song has it's own distinct personality and sound. I don't think anyone will be able to say that the songs all sound the same. We purposely gave them different guitar tones, drum tones, etc. At the same time, producer Ysidro Garcia did a great job of making the album flow seamlessly. Hope you all like it as much as we do. It's HEAVY! It's METAL! It's ULTIMATUM!

By bigjtink (10/14/2007 6:04:55 pm):
I get a lot of CD's sent to me. Most end up in a pile on my desk. This is different. I was actually waiting for this to arrive. Having the demo and hearing many of the songs live I was not very surprised at how good this thing is. For me, its practically perfect. Great riffs, killer solo's, good bass and tight drums. The vocals are the only real surprise. I thought Scott Waters performance on Wrath Child showed a different side of his abilities. I love Heart Of Metal (I know its cheese but its good cheese). Its one of those rare discs that every song is good. No filler. I gave it 5 stars only because there was no option for 6. Thanks for the hard work guys, it shows...j

By makemelaugh (10/20/2007 2:37:26 pm):
It is my favorite Ultimatum CD so far. The vocals seem a little bit deeper compared to Puppet of Destruction the only other CD i have of theirs. The CD is great all the way through i will be listening to Ultimatum a lot more.

By T-roy (10/24/2007 11:24:44 am):
This is just a REDICULOUSLY SICK album. The whole thing is thick with unreal shredding and crushing rhythms. Song architecture is simply the best there is. One minute your cruising with the top down, the next, your FACE IS MELTING OFF on the re-entry! There is no other current band that can match the technical shredding of Gutierrez nor the relentless and consistent deathy vocals of Waters. Heart of Metal has this stupid-fast riff during the chorus that prevents exhaling. The drums are punishing and clean throughout. This is just what thrash metal should be, intense, gut wrenching and crunchy. Hmmm, they aught to make an Ultimatum candy bar.

By RexorcisT (10/29/2007 9:18:23 am):
This is only one of the best Christian thrash metal albums to come along, ever!

By Central Pod Man (10/29/2007 3:59:35 pm):
When I first listened to this cd,I wasn't quite sure what to think of it.Later on,Isat down and listened to it without any distractions. After playing Into the Pit three times in a row I was hooked.I've been spinning this thing at least twice a day now. This stuff is really catchy!
The vocals are abrasive and gravel-like.The guitar work is well crafted and versatile.I really like the way the arpeggios are done within the leads. The bass has a beautiful tone and is very much in sync with the percussion. The drums chane tempos frequently but are not overdone at all.
I'm hearing a lot of Exodus,Accept,Megadeth, and Vengeance Rising influences. There's even some parts that remind me of Agnostic Front.
Some faves are:Transgressor,Blind Faith, and Game Over.
4 Stars

6 years is way to long to have to wait for a new album from one of your favorite bands. And in truth, it doesn't feel like it was in 2001 we last heard a new full-length album from Ultimatum. The first time I heard a new track that was going to be on the new album, was in 2003, when Scott sent me a rough demo version of "Heart Of Metal". I've been eagerly awaiting 'Into The Pit' ever since! And boy, is it worth the wait. The boys have once again turned it up a notch, and haven't settled for a sub par release. 'Into The Pit' contains 9 "new" songs, a cool cover of Iron Maiden's "Wrathchild", and a newly recorded studio version of "Blink", one of my favorite songs from the bands debut album. In fact, the entire album is friggin' great, and I constantly change favorite tracks from it. Scott has also roughened up the vocals a bit, using a more aggressive approach, not unlike what he was doing in Once Dead. I think it really suits the bands music, and creates another unique feature for them. I also totally dig Rob's pummeling bass work. He is very audible throughout the entire disc, and it is the first time I am really aware of the bass on an Ultimatum album. Sean has always been a monster drummer, and his work will be missed in the band. But I think they have found a worthy replacement in Alan Tuma. 'Into The Pit' is easily the bands best effort to date, and it will be a hard task to follow up with anything stronger than this.

Killer tracks: They are all great!

By solid (11/06/2007 12:11:00 pm):
First of all, this album rocks! I mean, it really really rocks! I'm not a huge huge thrash metal fan, but I really dig this from start to finish. Great riffs, great lyrics, great vocals, great cover art. It just looks awesome in my CD case too!

By Sutekh (11/09/2007 10:34:15 pm):
From the off, this album just grabs you and refuses to let you go until its smacked you down and picked you up over and over again. The boys are on top of their game when it comes to arranging and playing -I just can't find a weak track on this one. The classic thrash riffing of One for All opens this magnum opus, though I think Death Wish is my favourite song -just killer riffing and structure -the opening bass and drum combo is stunning, and I love the double bass drumming that kicks in just when you think the song might be finishing, as it rips back into it. Heart of Metal has reached anthemic proportions, so if you're complaining about the knowingly cheesy lyrics and not waving your fist or bangin' your head, you're clearly not listening to it the right way! (I also like the way it's written on the inside cover along the spine -nice touch!) The title Blood Covenant immediately reminded me of the Deliverance tune of a similar name, so I was stoked to hear some Deliverance influenced leads throughout (great dual guitar harmony lead), and vocally, this is the closest that Scott has ever sounded to Ian Arkley of Seventh Angel. And speaking of the legendary Brit band, the instrumental has a big debt to them (along with Iron Maiden) in the melodic leads. The Maiden cover is awesome, respecting the original yet sounding absolutely Ultimatum in execution.Scott's vocals are the best they've ever been, with his alternating between thrash shouts and death growls giving greater texture, movement and urgency to the songs. New recruit Alan Tuma is tight and rock solid. The cover evokes the 80s big time, and in a band so unashamedly 'old school' in their thrash, is absolutely fitting. The only possible quibble would be that some of these songs appeared on their last EP, but seeing as that was not only stunning but also limited, it's by no means a criticism or weakness! Anybody who digs the classic sounds of Vengeance, Deliverance, Sacrament or Seventh Angel NEEDS to get this.

Great CD. Ultimatum just straight up rules!

By Matthew Jolley (03/24/2008 1:27:50 pm):
What can you say Ultimatum just RULES they have done the best any band could do for metal

By General Grievous (04/05/2008 12:38:45 am):
They indeed do the best with classic metal.

By glorydwells (10/04/2008 9:09:36 am):
Very over-rated...

By glorydwells (10/04/2008 9:53:07 am):
Well, I mean i haven't heard the entire album but I've listened all the ones on their myspace and sampled on itunes. I'm not saying they're not talented, the music is killer. ...it just didn't strike me as, "WHOA incredible...".

By fishingd (10/29/2008 12:16:46 am):
This is a long over do review for me since I picked this album as the best album of 2007!! Thrash metal happens to be one of my favorite metal genres and that`s what you will get with Ultimatum These guys have been around for 15 years and never have slowed down that`s why I like this new album..These guys don`t let time change the style of thier music..

If a heavy guitar sound was everything that mattered then "Into the Pit" would be a certain winner added with Scott Waters killer vocals.. Fans of Accept, Exodus and Overkill will love this new album.

The "Heart Of Metal". This song is already a classic! In fact It`s a great metal anthem song for Chirtian or secular music scene..As for the Wratchild (Iron Maiden cover) this was great to listen to. I have not heard this song in a long time and these guys did a awsome job on it... Iron Maiden would be proud of them.. But on a serious note "One For All", "Deathwish" and "Blind Faith" these songs have the message of God and are the basis of the music on the album!

Let`s pray we don`t have to wait 6 years for a new album!!!!

this album gets a 5/5
Dale/Metal Pulse radio
